There is a known problem with the Visual Basic
installer which may affect some systems running Windows versions
prior to Windows XP. The symptoms usually are that the installer
informs you that some system files need to be updated, asks that
you reboot the machine and restart the installation. When restarting
the installation, the installer again informs you that some system
files need to be updated, asks that you reboot the machine and restart
the installation.
Microsoft acknowledges the problem in Knowledge
Base article 191096 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;191096)
and originally provided a repair tool (mcrepair.exe) to correct
the problem. I can no longer locate the repair tool on Microsoft's
Web site, but the KB article suggests several approaches to correcting
the problem. That should be your preferred method.
However, I have located a copy of the patch utility
mcrepair.exe and make it available for download. I strongly suggest
that you back up the files Oleaut32.dll, Olepro32.dll, Asycfilt.dll,
Stdole2.tlb from the Windows\system32 directory before running the
utility.
IMPORTANT: When the utility prompts you
whether you wish to overwrite Newer files, make sure to click YES
for each file ( do not select "No" or "No to All" ).
After you run the mcrepair.exe, you should be able
to complete the installation process.
